“Champagne taste with a beer budget”
This quote might possibly be the best words to describe my taste, however Rent the Runway has my back 100% of the time, EVERYTIME!
I absolutely love getting all dressed up, but it’s never practical to shell out a ton of money for a dress I’ll literally wear twice (if I’m lucky).
And let’s be honest, there’s not enough going on right now to justify the expense anyway.
I’ll also be the first to admit that I’ll go buy new clothes for every event because I don’t want to look like the serial outfit repeater that I actually am. (Lizzie McGuire- I feel ya, girlfriend.)
Over the last few years, I’ve heard about Rent the Runway, but I was pretty skeptical. I was worried that I’d rent a dress, it’d be the wrong size, and I’d be out my money with nothing to show for it.
Wellllll, I’ve jumped on the bandwagon and I’m honestly surprised it’s taken me this long!
What is Rent the Runway?
Rent the Runway is a rental service for high-end clothes.
Instead of spending $300+ on a dress that might see the outside of your closet three times (probably less than that, honestly) you can rent it for a fraction of the cost.
They have a ton of designers to choose from.
- Kate Spade to Kendra Scott
- Draper James to Diane von Furstenberg
The selection is honestly pretty impressive!
How does Rent the Runway Work?
After you find what you’re looking for, you pick the dates that you need the outfit. The rentals are available in 4 or 8 day increments.
They’ll ship the clothes straight to you in a garment bag. I’ve usually gotten my items a couple of days before I was expecting them! (type-A friends, I know you’re breathing a sigh of relief with me right now).
The items are all dry-cleaned, covered, hung up, and ready to go! (They might need a little steaming, but they’re overall in fantastic shape!).
It’s so easy to return your rentals that I actually thought I was missing something the first time I did it!
All you have to do is put the clothes back in the bag!
You don’t even have to hang them back up if you don’t want to. And they’ll recycle the hangers and plastic coverings for you, so just throw those in there too! Easy peasy! There’s even a card that tells you exactly what you need to do to return your items.
Your rental comes with a pre-paid shipping label on the other side of the card with your return directions. All you have to do is slip it into the pocket on the outside of the garment bag and voilà! It’s all packed up and ready to G-O!
Just take the garment bag to a FedEx store and they’ll do the rest for ya! (I don’t even wait in line- I literally tell them I have a prepaid package and ask if they mind if I just drop it off if there is a line!).
How do I know what size I need?
There are usually a ton of very detailed reviews left by people who have rented the items before you. Reviews often include detailed measurements, which size they normally wear, which size worked in that particular item, and a photo.
Based on the reviews, the website actually recommends the size it thinks you’d need- so you’ve got a great place to start!
One of my favorite things about using Rent the Runway is that you get two sizes of your outfit! That way, you have a backup if the size you originally thought you needed doesn’t quiiiiite work out.
What if I love everything I see?!
Oh man, I get it!! Rent the Runway actually has a monthly subscription where you can rent 4+ items at a time for a monthly fee! You can return and rent as much as you want. And even buy the things you really love!
Rent the Runway is my new go-to for weddings, holiday parties, and really any other excuse I can find to dress up, tbh.
This year, parties are few and far between, so rent the dress instead and use all that $ you saved for something you’ll actually use! Ya know… like sweatpants and another fuzzy blanket.
